It’s Alarming
“Life is a lot like jazz…it’s best when you improvise.”
George Gershwin
How do you respond when an alarm (something unexpected) goes off.
I’m at a conference this week. At 1:30am, the hotel fire alarm went off. I got up and wondered what was happening. Is it a drill. Is it a prank. Is it real. I put pants on over my pj bottoms, put on my jacket, grabbed my wallet and went out to the lobby, the closest exit. There were a few people out there. Every now and then someone would come in from outside. One person had her laptop. One person said she felt the door before she opened it to make sure it wasn’t hot. What was alarming, pun indented, was how few people were there. Did they hear the alarm. Did they call and ask. Did they assume it was a false alarm.
The fire alarm made me think of all the ways we respond when something unexpected happens. Ignore it. Follow procedures. Make decisions in the moment. Does it cause us to step out of our comfort zone and try something new.
Vibrant Living Tip – This week pay attention to how you respond to unexpected events. Notice without judgment. Then ask – can I do this better.
