Compassion Helps Create Harmony in All Areas
Having compassion for yourself and others affects your life, your relationships and your business.
Compassion is defined as the ability to understand the emotional state of another person. Moreover, it encompasses understanding our own emotional state. As a result, compassion motivates us to help and support others—and ourselves. It inspires us to do what we can to ease another person's suffering.
Imagine how different your conversations would be if you were able to approach them with compassion?
Your Vibrant Living Tip…
What keeps us from feeling compassion. One of the biggest reasons is judgement. We naturally connect with people who are like us. Think like us. Act like us. When someone does or says something that we may not agree with, it is easy to judge. Judgement keeps us from feeling compassion.
I can remember a being behind a car. All of the sudden the door opens and a little boy falls out. My immediate response – how irresponsible. I stopped to see what I could do to help. The driver got out and seemed very upset. She said – my husband died last week and I having a really hard time right now. Wow. Did that change how I felt. I immediately moved to compassion for her.
What if instead of judging we could just move to compassion. For ourselves and the other person.
One great thing to do when you feel triggered is to breathe using the box method. Breathe in through you nose for a count of 4. Hold it for 4. Breathe out through your mouth for 6. hold it for 4. Do this 2 or 3 times. At this point you can respond differently. This moves you from your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) to parasympathetic (calm). You can consciously respond instead of reacting. This allows you to move from judgement to compassion.
Your Vibrant Living Take Away…
Next time you feel a bit of agitation from a friend, colleague, customer, or random stranger. Stop and breathe. Ask - how can I connect to understand this person better. Every time you feel yourself going to judgement, stop and breathe. Move to compassion. Smile. Even if you are on the phone. See how that changes your interactions with people.
How are you going to show more compassion today? To yourself? To others?
Until next time…
Dream bravely.
Act Boldly.
Live Vibrantly.
